Why My Wife and Parents Win

Anyone who's known me for any reasonable length of time knows that I'm pretty apathetic towards my birthday. Don't get me wrong, it's not an age thing - in fact, I am pumped for my 30s and I think they are going to be awesome. Nor is it because my parents never made a big deal about my birthday - my birthday was the night where I got to choose the meal (whether cooked or out) and I always had great parties as a little kid. Here's where my problems lie:

1. My birthday is September 4th, and it's just a downright awful time of the year. Summer is over, and everyone is usually away or chock full of plans for Labor Day Weekend. Also, since I'm in public education (as is my wife and many of our friends) it is a crazy & stressful time as we're all scrambling around getting everything together for the start of the school year. To that end, I'm usually too stressed out to relax and enjoy my birthday with my friends. I used to get really upset by that, but these days I'm usually just worried about other things that I don't need a party/dinner out/get-together/whatever.

2. It's a double-whammy of not really wanting people to buy me gifts, and not really knowing what I'd want when people insist. My theory is this: if I really wanted something, I'd buy it. Simple. Unfortunately, this facet of my personality has driven my parents and Stephanie crazy over the years.

So, why do my Stephanie and my parents win? My mother had made a suggestion for a birthday gift, one that I had blown off due to lack of need and lack of storage space. She seemed surprised, seeing this item is something I've always wanted, and have resigned myself to the fact that I won't buy until we move into a bigger house. However, Steph won when she made a suggestion about clearing out some knick-knacks into storage and giving me room for said present. Needless to say, I'm actually getting excited about getting this present.

Here's the challenge: The only hints I'll give you are that it is something for the kitchen (shocking, right?) and I need a good amount of storage space for it. Can you guess what it is? Steph, Mom, Dad, Rory, Mike & Laurie are prohibited from answering ;)

Damn right, Rob. Honestly, it's the only thing I really need for the kitchen that I don't already have. Well, that and a thermal immersion circulator.

You've got the 5 quart, right? It holds up to the workload pretty well>

I got the Pro 610 from Williams-Sonoma (because I had a bunch of giftcards) it's 6qts with the lifting/raising (not flip up) doo-hickey thing.

I think the 610 is exclusive to WS as I've only seen the 600 or 620 at other places.

In any case, it is more than enough for most any task outside a professional kitchen.

I would, however, suggest 2 attachements. the meat grinder and sausage stuffer (the meat grinder is like 60$ and the stuffer is like 15$ for the little plastic tubes but ya need the grinder) and if you like rolling fresh pasta (or rather HATE hand rolling fresh pasta) the pasta roller is a good one.

if you are putting it under a cabinet, the flip up, might not be the best choice, also, you'll hear people say that you need the pro or something more for doing bread, etc...bullshit, Unless you are cranking out 10 loafs a day, I'd imagine any kitchen aid would fit the task of kneading dough for what us laymen need it for.

I gotta admit. It's not one of those tools I use all the time....actually I don't use it much at all...but when I do need to mix something, it's well worth its weight in gold!!! cookies, etc. etc. without having to hold a hand mixer is fantastic.

I'd like the 6 quart - I may even kick in a bit to the parents to upgrade. It's the same model we bought my mother as a gift a few years back.

I definitely agree - the meat grinder is at the top of my list, followed by the pasta roller. I was jealous of the chicken sausage you made, and am looking forward to giving different recipes a whirl.

One thing I'd be interested in trying is doing some aging and curing - my parents have a mini-fridge in their garage that would be perfect for that sort of thing. If only to convince them to let me rent some space in it.

I got the 5 quart for my birthday 3 or 4 years ago and I don't think i could live without it now. I love it, I use it for everything and I have NO room for it anywhere. but that doesn't stop me. not one single bit. it makes everything easier, better and more delicious! Enjoy it!
